Hello America! It is always exciting when there is a chance of introducing a new independent film to the industry. This is especially true when young film people are involved - after all they are the ones who give notice of what our motion pictures future will be pretty much about.

The production of NUTCRACKER, I'm happy to report, is one of the most sophisticated and professional films shot on a low budget in recent years. It is a tribute to the talent and ingenuity of the Producers and Director that this is a film with a multi-million dollar look, but is produced on a shoestring budget. It truly has the look and feel of a topnotch special effects film.

One of the film’s stars, David Hess, is the actor who first appeared in the film that launched Wess Craven’s career, "The Last House On the Left". David has starred in two other Wess Craven films and he has directed his own feature, "To All A Goodnight". He has a huge fan base, and continues to appear as a special guest at Fandom conventions.

The Film was made with advanced state-of-the-art technology for brain waves provided courtesy of UCSF’s Neuropsychology Lab located at the VA Hospital in San Francisco. This lab is one of the premiere locations for equipment of this nature, and has a reputation for providing cutting-edge technology and the latest testing equipment for scientists who are trying to decipher the inner workings of the human brain.

The production company had the help of everybody in the Bay Area, it seems. For example the San Francisco State broadcasting Studio, the largest studio of its kind on the West Coast, and for the scene of the TV show "Millennial Viewpoint." The look and feel of the studio lends to the production an air of realism that would be otherwise impossible on our budget. Cheryl Jennings, one of San Francisco's most well known and respected local News Anchors as the Hostess of the show, to add yet another level of reality and sophistication beyond that of an ordinary actress.

In every way, NUTCRACKER sets the standard by which all other independent productions will be measured. In its own way, it will take its place alongside other hugely successful independent features, i.e., "The Blair Witch Project", "The Brothers McMullen", "El Mariachi". The difference is that whereby these others have all been made using amateur locations and unknown actors, NUTCRACKER uses name actors and sophisticated sets and locations to achieve a true high-tech and big-budget feel for next to no money.

This column applauds the producers of NUTCRACKER because it continues the genuine idea why films survive – it is the story that counts and this film has it in a big way.
